Places don’t have pulse on their own.

People give it to them.

Places with Pulse is an ongoing editorial series focused on the people behind the places — the owners, chefs, bakers, farmers, servers, bartenders, brewers, baristas, and makers shaping where we gather across Victoria and Vancouver Island.

From those who grow the ingredients to those who transform them, each story explores the human effort, care, and intention that give a place its heartbeat.

From the Editor

Places with Pulse is written and photographed by Casandra "Cassie" Malynowskyj — a Victoria-based designer working with independent businesses across Vancouver Island.

My work lives at the intersection of branding, culture, and human connection. After years of paying attention to how spaces feel — not just how they look — this project became a way to document the people and decisions that give places their pulse.

This series isn’t about trends or rankings. It’s about noticing what makes a place feel alive — and giving credit to the people who make that happen.

If there’s a restaurant, café, bar, or space in Victoria or Vancouver Island that feels alive — I’d love to hear about it.
